Idea from the Human Puzzle drawings develops more in this series of paintings, connecting with Gestalt theory in psychology, which says that “The whole is greater than the sum of the parts”. In German the word Gestalt means figure, essential shape of a form, and the theory explains human brain like holistic and analog and our visual perception like recognition of the whole forms and not just a sum of a simple shapes.
So, the observer will perceive which subject is on the painting even if it doesn’t have all the pieces – that doesn’t deprive it of the meaning. Everybody sees the whole that they represent, but everybody also substitutes the missing parts with their own explanation, which is based on one’s previous experiences.
